The Real Expiration Date of your Packaged Foods

Updated: Jul 14, 2019

What do different terms mean on your packaged foods? Being able to identify what each term means can help you reduce food waste and keep you and your family safe!

Sell By

Mainly should be used by stores to make sure their stock is rotated

Best Before/Best if Used By

This can be used to help you determine if the quality of the food is "optimal", but it does not tell you that the food is expired or unsafe.

Use by/Expiration Date

This is used to help you know if food is potentially unsafe to eat.

Throwing out foods that have gone past their "sell by" date, is wasting food that is not really expired, and can result in you wasting money and food. By knowing these terms you can help reduce food waste and save money in the process!

If foods ever smell questionable, or have had a large change in temperature(going from cold to staying in your hot hot car for a few hours), or has mold, play it safe and throw it out! (or compost it!)
